Arnold Kurland 1929-2024

Arnold Kurland, better known as “Bob” to his family and friends, 94, of Pompton Plains, NJ, peacefully passed away on February 17, 2024 after a long illness.

He was born April 19, 1929, in Brooklyn, NY to Jacob and Anna Kurland. Bob was a graduate of Brooklyn College. Drafted into the US Army during the Korean War, he served as a supply sergeant at Camp Lee in Virginia. Bob and his beloved wife of 53 years, Phyllis, moved to and raised their family in Glen Rock, NJ where they lived for over 50 years, before he moved to Cedar Crest in Pompton Plains, NJ. He was a lifelong and award-winning sportswriter and wrote for The Bergen Record, as well as other other publications, for 45 years before retiring in 2000. A devotee of the theater and aspiring thespian, he attended dozens of Broadway shows, and performed many times on the Cedar Crest stage.

Devoted father of Jeffrey and his wife Cheryl of Oakland, NJ and Orin and his wife Michelle of Pelham, NY. Proud grandfather of Amanda, Leah, Jay, and Jack.  Devoted brother-in-law to Joseph Hollday of Los Angeles, CA, and Deborah Brown of NY, NY.  He also leaves behind adored nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, as well as beloved companion Gail Bloomstein. He will also be missed by his “ferocious” grand-dogs Lulu and Starry.

He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis, his parents, and step-father Samuel Nadler.

He was a proud supporter of many Jewish-based charities so a contribution in Bob’s name to any of them would be greatly appreciated.
