General Information
Full Name: Israel R. Torres
Date of Death: Thursday, September 5, 2019
Israel R. Torres The youngest of eleven children, born on May 29th, 1932, Israel was raised in a Pentecostal home by his dedicated Christian mother, Josefa Rivera, in Santurce, Puerto Rico. While still a teenager, he went to study at an Assembly of God Bible School in New York, also at the New York Theological Seminary and the Moody Bible Institute. Shortly after graduating from Bible School he was drafted into the U.S.Army and served his country as a medical corpsman for two years, one of them being both in Korea and Japan. Since that time he dedicated his life to the church, preaching and singing in the United States and many foreign countries including Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. This is how he met his wife, Cathy, in April of 1959, while he was ministering in Cuba. After coming to the United States, he pastored a church in Chicago, Illinois where his oldest son was born. His other children were born in Los Angeles, CA, Brooklyn, NY and Paterson, NJ. In his later years he moved his family to Fair Lawn, although still evangelising when possible, and started working in the New Jersey court system as a translator. During his last year and a half, he did slow down a bit and moved into the Veteran’s Home in Paramus, NJ. After a beautiful and long life Israel went to his eternal home, as he would call it, on Thursday, September 5, 2019 at 8:10am. His family, laughter, song, travel and the church were his joys. He leaves his five children behind. Israel, John, Deborah (and her husband Angel), Ruth (and her husband Garrett), Eric (and his wife Laura). He also leaves five beautiful and loving grandchildren, Ava, Ben, Celia, Noemi and Sefina. He truly lived a life of passion and purpose.
