General Information

Full Name: Joshua Seth Lichtenstein
Date of Death: Thursday, July 23, 2020

Joshua Seth Lichtenstein, a prominent litigation attorney and lifelong resident of New Jersey, died on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at the age of 53, from a malignant brain tumor he had been battling for more than two years.

Josh is survived by his wife, Nancy Ruggiero Lichtenstein; his daughters, Miranda and Felicia; his mother, Francine Lowenstein; his sister, Andrea Marshall; his in-laws, Mary Ann and Frank Ruggiero, Doug and Maria Salvi, and Craig Marshall; and his nieces and nephews,  Halee Bazer, Allyson Bazer, Matthew Bazer, Jacob Bazer, Alyssa Marshall, Jacob Marshall, Gemma Salvi, and Adelyn Salvi, as well as numerous other family members and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Ira Lichtenstein, and his stepfather, Jerome Lowenstein.

Josh grew up in East Brunswick, NJ, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Michigan, where he was an adored member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He received his law degree from Hofstra University in 1992. Hearing impaired since birth, he overcame this disability to become one of the most respected and admired members of the legal community due to his remarkable intellect, thirst for justice, indomitable sense of humor and warm, caring demeanor.

He met Nancy at a Halloween party in 1992 and they married at a beautiful interfaith ceremony at the Essex House in Manhattan on July 16, 1995. The couple were very proud to have just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this month in spite of all of the difficulties this illness presented. His beloved daughters were born in 1998 and 2002, and he was a devoted father who actively participated in their lives.

Besides family and law, Josh’s greatest passions were music (both consuming and playing— he was an avid fan of genres ranging from classic jazz to heavy metal, and also taught himself to play guitar beautifully), Michigan football games, Yankees baseball, gourmet restaurants and cooking, and going to the beach, especially in Ocean City, NJ and Miami Beach, FL.

While he didn’t particularly desire to travel, he allowed himself to be dragged along on and ultimately enjoyed numerous family adventures, most recently a 19 day trip to London, Paris, Madrid, and Rome last summer.

The easiest way to describe Josh is to say truthfully that virtually everyone who ever met him, even briefly, loved him. His loss will leave a huge hole in the fabric of our lives.
