Marvin Brown, Publishing Executive, Dies at 87

Marvin S. Brown, former President at Atheneum Publishers 1961-83, New American Library 1983-87, Viking Penguin 1987-91, and Penguin USA 1991-97, died in his home July 15th in Boca Raton, Florida. He was 87. Mr. Brown was a prominent executive in the world of publishing having advanced the work of numerous influential writers throughout his 30+ year career.

Known as Mike to his friends and family, Mr. Brown was born on Jan. 28, 1935 in Bayonne, New Jersey to Arthur and Esther Brown. He graduated the University of Pennsylvania in 1956, Brooklyn Law School in 1960, and was a Certified Public Accountant, who passed the NY Bar in 1961. Mr. Brown served in the US Army Reserve from 1959-65, and served on both the University of Pennsylvania Library Board of Overseers and the Board of Trustees for the University of Pennsylvania Press for 5 year terms. Mr. Brown was also an avid golfer and a Gold Life Master Bridge player.

Marvin Brown married Marlyn Susman on Sept. 11, 1960. She predeceased him on Mar. 17, 2017. He is also predeceased by his brother Leonard S. Brown. He is survived by his children Scott Brown and Nanci Brown, her husband Luis Silva, his grandchild Julian (Jules) Brown Silva, his sisters-in-law Eileen Susman and Elaine Brown, and numerous adoring nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews.

Services will be streamed. Remembrances can be made in the form of a donation to the American Cancer Society.
