General Information

Full Name: Mildred Dorothy Gherman
Date of Death: Wednesday, April 29, 2020

Mildred Dorothy Gherman passed away on April 29 at Bear Creek Assisted Living in West Windsor, NJ.

Mildred ( Millie ) was born in 1924 in Jersey City, NJ to Phillip and Lillian Newman

and lived in NJ her entire life. She grew up in West New York and North Bergen. In 1940 she met the love of her life, Harold Gherman, at a party that was attended by friends and family. Shortly after, during WWII, they were engaged. During the war, Millie had a full-time job with Western Electric to test radar sets, a real “Rosie the Riveter.” Harold spent the war as a medic in both the Navy and the Marines. They were married in 1944, and after the war, settled in their first home in Bergenfield, where their two children Judith and Cary were born. As an electrician and building contractor, Harold’s employment took them to residences in White Meadow Lake and Hillsdale. While in Hillsdale, Harold worked as the captain and head of the town’s volunteer ambulance corp, and Millie played a prominent role in the Hillsdale Ambulance corp auxiliary.

Both Harold and Millie were at the core of the blended families- always ready to help family members and friends whenever life’s difficulties would arise. Their marriage was a model of love and success, that all who knew them admired.

While Millie was working for Lehn and Fink in Montvale, Harold passed away unexpectedly, and Millie was alone after more than 40 years of marriage. She moved to the retirement community of Concordia in Monroe Township, and lived there for 25 years, making many new, lifetime friends- especially her mah jongg partners.

Millie is survived by her daughter, Judith Marks and son-in-law, Ira, as well as son, Cary Gherman and daughter-in law, Michelle. She has been blessed with 4 grandchildren Stephanie Marks Garrison (Jacob Garrison), Andrew Marks, Renee Claiborne (Taylor Claiborne) and Ryan Gherman and 2 great grandchildren, Laurel Garrison and Samuel Marks. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Rosalyn Pogol.
