Full Name: Myra Susan Altman Sommer
Date of Death: Wednesday, July 24, 2024
Myra Sommer Z”L passed away on July 24, 2024 in her home in Lake Worth Florida. Her
passing was sudden, due to a fall, but she did not suffer. Myra was born October 15, 1940
in Brooklyn NY and moved to River Edge NJ at age 10 with her parents Sylvia and Frank
Altman and her brother Joseph (Deena) Altman.
Myra is predeceased by her first husband and love, Ellis Sommer, and her second love, Roy
Cohen. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Gail (Eric) Goldfarb and Lori (Tony)
Gould, her son Marc (Andrea) Sommer, Roy’s daughters Pamela Cohen Polifron and
Bonnie (Ryan) Lafazan, and her grandchildren Alex (Emma Searson) and Jackson Gould,
Joshua (Madeleine Ireland) and Matthew Goldfarb, Benjamin Sommer, Jade Polifron and
Aidan and Evan Lafazan.
Myra will be remembered most as a very loving mother and grandmother and a devoted
wife. She was especially happy to attend the recent wedding of her first grandson and was
elated that another grandson announced his engagement this week. Myra always sent
birthday and anniversary cards and was oozing with pride for all her children’s and
grandchildren’s accomplishments.
Myra found community and friends wherever she lived and she truly loved her life. She
loved living at 103 Brown Circle in Paramus NJ where she and Ellis raised 3 kids; Great
Notch in NJ and ultimately Bellagio in FL with Roy were the “golden years.”
Many NJ friends moved to Florida, and some long-time NJ friends also bought homes in the
same Bellagio community. Myra loved people, community and playing mah-jong and
canasta.
Myra earned an Associate Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in NJ. She was a hair
model for American Hairdresser magazine in the 60s, then worked part-time at Bergen
Pharmacy in NJ with her husband Ellis Sommer, pharmacist and owner for decades. Myra
played tennis and she and Ellis were in the Brown Circle bowling league. Myra was elected
President of the temple sisterhood and was active in Bnai Brith, Hadassah, and more
recently in Pap Corps and the Jewish Heritage Club at Bellagio.
Myra gave a lot of love which will be with us all forever.
