Alvin Yale Milberg, who served as the Assignment Judge for Monmouth County for more than 10 years, died on April 20, 2025. He was 95 years old.

Judge Milberg was born on July 28, 1929 in Newark, NJ to Joseph M. Milberg & Bertha L. Milberg. He grew up in Teaneck, NJ. In later years, he lived in Deal, Rumson and Monmouth Beach. He retired to Palm Beach, Florida, in 1995.

Judge Milberg graduated from the Perkiomen School, the University College of Arts & Sciences at New York University and the Law School at Washington and Lee University where he served on the editorial board of the law review.

He began his legal career by joining his father and uncles at the Jersey City law firm of Milberg & Milberg. He opened his own office in Asbury Park, NJ in 1956. During the 1970’s, he served as the Municipal Court Judge in Deal & Allenhurst.

In December 1980, after 25 years in private practice, he was appointed to the state judiciary. He began his judicial career in what was then the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, where he primarily handled matrimonial cases. He transferred to the criminal division, where he was the criminal assignment judge until his elevation in September 1983, to the top position in the courthouse. During his years on the court, he also served as the presiding judge of the civil and family divisions of the court.

His most renowned case was the suit filed by the State Public Advocate alleging that the fees charged by the Borough of Belmar to use the beach were unreasonable and discriminatory against non-residents. The guidelines he established from that case more than 30 years ago, on the fees a governing body may charge to use the beach, is still binding.

He was a former member of the American Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, Monmouth County Bar Association, Virginia State Bar Associated, American Judicature Society Commercial Law League of America, Monmouth Beach Bath & Tennis Club, Monmouth Boat Club, Congregation Sons of Israel & Temple Beth Miriam.

He leaves his loving wife of 64 years, Sylvia Milberg and his daughter, Barbara Mandell (Andrew) and grandchildren Arden & Reid.

It was his request for a private funeral.
