General Information
Full Name: Peter C. Liman
Date of Death: Tuesday, October 7, 2025
Peter C. Liman, age 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. He was an accomplished businessman, inventor and noted oil landscape artist. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, (BA) 1960, and graduate of Harvard, (MA) in 1963, he also served as a LT. in the Navy on an aircraft carrier (USS Kearsarge) and on a destroyer tender (USS Cascade), Peter’s love of the Navy was profound as was his connection with his Navy officer friends. Peter’s love of the ocean and travel was influenced by his father, Elliot Liman, who was regarded as “The Dean of the Steamship Business” according to the New York Times. Elliot’s 40 years as a senior executive of the Holland America Line led him to help create the cruise industry in America as it exists today.
Peter held senior executive positions in marketing, sales, and general management in companies like Faberge, Shulton, Bristol Myers, Del Labs, Nabisco (JB Williams), and Tristar. He also was an inventor and was awarded US Patent #3,329,144 in 1967 for waterproof cast and bandage protectors and founded Dryspell Industries which sold his products to major drugstore chains and to orthopedic doctor suppliers.
Upon retiring, he had a private consultant business (Genesis International), and later founded Big Hollow Art Studio in Windham, NY high in the Catskills. It was there he pursued his passion for impressionistic art and became an associate of Oil Painters of America and other artist organizations. Peter’s landscapes were sold in many galleries, hospitals, colleges, and to hundreds of private collectors. He received numerous awards and Harvard magazine wrote him up as “The Monet of the Mountain Top” painting the lakes, creeks, and forests that captivated him.
Peter’s love for his adored wife, Regina Feinstein-Liman, his Mother Adlyn Liman Apter, his children, grandchildren, and family members were the “North Star’ of his life. He is survived by his wife Regina, sister Linda Herman, daughter Erin Liman, son-in-law Marc Levine, stepsister Vicki Apter and husband David, stepdaughter Bari Feinstein, daughter-in-law Elianne Alexander, her husband Steven, grandchildren Evan, Lindsey, Benjamin, and Cole Liman. He was predeceased by his former wife, Virginia Liman, and by his only son, Craig Liman. Marybeth Roman, Craig’s partner, survives him. Peter was a loyal friend to many from his elementary, high school, and college days, loved skiing, the opera, theatre, international travel, and reading nonfiction books and newspapers.
In addition to serving as a Harvard Alumni interviewer for seven years, Peter took on another important challenge. He published a colorful museum quality autobiography/art book entitled “The Monet of the Mountain Top”. That included 70 of his paintings. The book is in the permanent collection of numerous public libraries.
Although healthy for most of his life, he faced a prolonged and courageous battle with a rare form of cancer, receiving care and treatment as a dedicated patient at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
