General Information
Full Name: Sam A. Wolfe
Date of Death: Sunday, November 23, 2025
Samuel A. Wolfe died peacefully on November 23, 2025, following a long illness. Sam was born in Brooklyn, NY to Anne and David Wolfe. Seeking the New Jersey suburbs, his family moved to Matawan, NJ. Sam graduated from Cornell University and the University of North Carolina School of Law.
Sam began his legal career at the law firm Norris McLaughlin, PA, but his real calling was to be a public servant. So he left private practice to embark upon a career as an environmental attorney at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. He rose to become an Assistant Commissioner of the Air and Radiation programs. At NJDEP, he demonstrated a quick mastery of many complex issues, and offered solutions to the most complicated problems.
Following a successful run at NJDEP, he became Chief Counsel at the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities where he developed expertise in energy law and policy, demand response, and climate solutions. He remained in the energy field at Public Service Electric and Gas and Ormat Technologies, Inc. until his retirement in 2020.
Throughout his professional career, Sam mentored many colleagues and staff. He derived tremendous satisfaction helping to advance the careers of others.
When not working, Sam enjoyed playing tennis, reading, and skiing, but most importantly, he loved being a family man. He adored his wife and three children. Sam was a smart, quick-witted, gentle, and kind soul, with a quirky sense of humor.
Sam leaves behind his wife, Alyssa, and his adult children, Noah, Laura, and Jonathan. He is also survived by his parents, Anne and David Wolfe; his cousin Lisa Mirin; mother-in-law Ina Laman; sister-in-law Amy Cooper; niece Rebecca Cooper; and many close friends and relatives. Sam was predeceased by his sister, Laura Beth Wolfe.
Contributions in Sam’s memory may be made to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen or the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, two causes near and dear to him.
